Myristica Swamp Wetland
In the rain-drenched Dodamarg district of Sindhudurg, Maharashtra lies this dense forest, older than the Himalayas. These spaces were considered as Devrai (Sacred groves) by the local community.] and hence, revered and protected for generations. They lay scattered across this lush landscape now. Here, the felling of timber and killing of animals is taboo. But with eroding cultural values, come fresh problems.
This Myristica Swamp, locally named ‘Kandalachi Rai’ is m a reserved forest mostly comprised of semi evergreen vegetation. Myristica Fatua, the predominant tree species,is listed as endangered in the IUCN red list 17.
